The archipelago of the Îles de la Madeleine is located in the middle of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, or more precisely: 215 km from the Gaspé peninsula, 105 km from Prince Edward Island and 95 km from Cape Breton Island.

The archipelago is made up of about a dozen islands of which six are connected to one another by long, thin, sand dunes. The Islands' names (from north to south) are: île de la Grande Entrée and Grosse-Île, île aux Loups, île du Havre aux Maisons, Île du Cap aux Meules and île du Havre Aubert. Two other larger islands are part of the archipelago as well: île d'Entrée, located 10 km east of Havre-Aubert; île Brion, 16 km north of Grosse-Île.

By Airplane
Air traffic to the archipelago comes through the Îles de la Madeleine airport (YGR), which is located on Havre aux Maisons Island. This airport is owned and operated by Transport Canada. Thanks to its commercial flights to and from major urban centres, it provides the Madelinots with year-round transportation and supply services. It also allows large numbers of visitors to fly to the Îles de la Madeleine, an increasingly popular destination.

Several aviation companies offer daily flights to the Îles de la Madeleine, with flights from Montréal, Québec and Gaspé. Flight time can vary from one to four hours depending on the departure city and the number of en-route stops.
